Abstract

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have established themselves as disruptive technologies that enrich the tourist experience through immersive and personalized environments. This study aimed to analyze the scientific production on AR and VR in tourism between 2015 and 2025, identifying trends, key actors and collaboration networks. To this end, a bibliometric analysis of documents extracted from the Scopus database was carried out, including articles, reviews, chapters and conference proceedings published until June 9, 2025. Processing was performed with R and the Bibliometrix/Biblioshiny package. The results show a sustained growth in scientific production, from 132 publications in 2015 to 810 in 2024, with citation peaks in 2018 and 2020. Authors such as Li Y., Tom Dieck Mc. and Jung T. stand out for their productivity and impact, while Q1 journals such as Sustainability and Current Issues in Tourism lead the way in the dissemination of knowledge. China and the United States dominate scientific production, followed by India and Italy, with the emergence of emerging sub-networks in Latin America. The most frequent terms include "augmented reality", "virtual reality", "tourism" and "immersive", and the thematic map positions VR as the driving theme and AR applied to cultural tourism as the basic theme. In conclusion, AR and VR are consolidated as strategic tools for the creation of immersive experiences in the tourism sector.
